I was appointed as Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist for Tayside in 1987, Senior Lecturer in 1998 and Reader in Child and Adolescent Health, University of Dundee in 2001. I have a specific research interest in diabetes in the young and was Secretary to the Scottish Study Group for the Care of the Young with Diabetes from 1990 to 2000, from which I directed the DIABAUD Programme. I edited “Diabetes in the Young” the official journal of the International Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes and delivered an invited lecture at the 2000 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) meeting. My experience in diabetes in the young led to my appointment as Chairman of both the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network 2002 (SIGN) and the National Institute for Clinical excellence 2004 (NICE) Guideline committees for Type 1 diabetes in Children and Adolescents. I was Secretary to the Academic Board of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (1999-2004) and have recently been elected as the RCPCH David Baum International Fellow (2006-2009). Diabetes in Children and AdolescentsOur programme for Diabetes in the Young was established in 1990 and has developed a national and international reputation. Recent research interests include intensive therapy for diabetes, e-Health projects and the cultural impact on health and chronic illness of the young.Objectives:To evaluate and optimise the outcome of children and adolescents with diabetes and investigate the childhood antecedents of adult diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Outcome of Chronic Disease: To direct quality of care outcome programmes to establish randomised controlled trials in novel medical and behavioural therapy strategies to improve glycaemic control. Concordance with Therapy:To invent novel e-Health strategies to support young people and their families with chronic diseases to improve concordance with therapy Childhood factors in adult disease:> To investigate factors in childhood growth and lifestyle that influences the risk of adult diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome.
