Divisional Profile

photo of Maternal &Child Health Sciences

The aims of the Division, which has been formed by a merger of the Tayside Institute of Child Health and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, are to:

  • Achieve excellence in teaching and in basic and applied research relating to the health of women and children
  • Facilitate the translation of research into clinical practice
  • Recruit and support future clinical and basic science academics
  • Provide high quality specialist medical services
The Division delivers an outcome-based undergraduate curriculum for child health, obstetrics and gynaecology - making explicit the links with the science which underpins modern clinical practice. Additionally, there are diverse opportunities for relevant student selected components, providing clinical and research experience.

The Division's current staff profile comprises 15 academics(clinical and non-clinical), 13 contract research staff, 5 research nurses, 7 administrative/support staff and 9 training fellows and students.

Currently, the division has an active and growing research profile with an external annual research expenditure of approximately £4.1M and current support from the major research funding organisations, including the Wellcome Trust, MRC, NHS and Industry. The annual research spend for the division is approximatley £1M. The Division's research activity is focussed on research into maternal health, fetal development, adaptation to extra-uterine life and postnatal development - utilising a mix of clinical, epidemiological, cellular and molecular approaches.

There are excellent laboratory facilities for basic research comprising 1200 m2 of laboratory and office space and seminar rooms, and a new £2.2M development adjacent to the Division's research laboratories and main clinical facilities for Child Health and Obstetrics & Gynaecology provides accommodation for clinical and epidemiological research. Epidemiological projects relating to maternal, child and infant health are facilitated by collaborations with powerful national data sources.

The physical co-localisation of research and clinical activities which has occurred is seen as a means to further strengthen the collaborative links between scientific and clinical staff, both in providing a comprehensive service for women and children' s health for the region and in undertaking patient-related and basic research of national and international importance.
