How do I access Pure?

The Pure system will be accessible via the Discovery Research Portal from the beginning of September 2012.  In the interim it can be accessed by clicking on the link below:

Who has access to Pure?

Pure includes information about Persons and Users. Persons are research active people and have profile information with contact details, biography, research and teaching interests. They are linked to one or more of the content areas in Pure. Users are able to log in to Pure and access approved parts of the system to create, edit, approve or delete content.

Current research active staff are Persons and Users in Pure, and therefore have access to log in. Research postgraduates are also Users so that they can submit their thesis - we are evaluating options to add them as Persons, with profile information describing their research interests.

Research administrators, division and departmental secretaries, and other approved staff, can also be granted User access, in order to maintain content as well as act as Trusted Users on behalf of academics and other Users.

There are many levels of access roles that can be granted to Pure users: only one or two people will be granted full administrator access; teams such as LLC and Press will have access as Editors of their respective content types; and some research administrators will be given access to their department, school or college subset. Most academic staff will only require access as Personal Users, which allows them to maintain their own profile as well as add, approve or disclaim research outputs as an ongoing activity.

Note that Personal users do not have access to the profiles of other Persons within Pure.

Why do I need to activate my profile?

In consultation with the Vice Principal for Research, it was decided that staff profiles in Pure would not be visible outside the Pure system, and that academics and other Pure users should be given the opportunity to check and amend their profile information before electing to make it publicly visible via the Discovery Research Portal.

This means that you can check the synchronised data that comes from University databases, such as your name, departmental affiliation(s), position, and request that this information is amended if necessary. You can also add other information that is not held centrally, such as post-nominals, contact address details, biography, research and teaching interests.

Once you have checked and amended this information, you can make your profile visible to campus machines only, or also make it publicly visible outside the University. Instructions for doing this are in the section on Using Pure.

Why aren't all my research outputs available?

Research outputs from 2008 onwards were identified as the priority group, in order that validation of metadata, copyright and open access information could be checked by LLC staff. The aim has been to populate the system with a large set of recent research work across the University, as part of the preparation for Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) and also to indicate current research activity.

Online guides are available to show you how to augment this information with older, as well as more recent work, as necessary to complete your research profile. This information can be imported from other online sources as well as uploading your existing bibliography or adding content manually.

If your research output is visible within Pure, but is not showing in the Discovery research portal, it may be that the content has not yet been validated and approved, or that there are embargo or confidentiality conditions on the research. If you need assistance, please contact the Pure Helpdesk.

Where are my awards, public engagement activities etc?

Information about other research-related activity is not recorded centrally or in a consistent format. We are extracting press releases and cuttings from the University's Press Office website with the aim of importing them into Pure. They can then be linked manually to your profile, research outputs and other related activities.

The Press Office and Revealing Research team are both going to use Pure to capture future press and public engagement activity, which will provide a University-wide database of this information for publication and reporting requirements.

If you have a departmental database that records information about all your awards or other research activity, please let us know by logging a call in the Pure Helpdesk. We may be able to work with Atira to import this into Pure.

Why should I use Pure?

Pure is the University's chosen system for capturing and reporting on research related activity, as well as the system that underpins the new look for Discovery, the University's research portal. These two interfaces provide, for the first time, an integrated environment for all research activity within the University, including information about research outputs, funding and research projects (coming soon), press releases and media coverage, public engagement, business and community activities and awards.

In addition, the project team are working with web developers around the University to re-use data from Pure to enhance websites in other parts of the University. This will help to minimise the duplication of effort as well as increase consistency of information in all areas.

How do I view the Pure calendar?

The Pure calendar is maintained in an Office 365 resource called PURE, containing events related to the Pure project. The training schedule, along with drop-in sessions, is also in this calendar and you can access this information in several ways:

  1. If you have been invited to training and have selected one of the options offered, we will add you as a recipient to that event and this will be in your own dMail calendar
  2. If you are using dMail via web access, you can Add Calendar from the Sharing option; if you are using Windows or Mac Outlook, you can Open Calendar - either way, select the PURE resource to view this calendar
  3. If you have a desktop browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc, you should be able to view the HTML version of the calendar (this does not work with Safari or Chrome on iOS)
  4. If your client supports the iCalendar standard you can add the calendar to your diary; if you wish to subscribe to the calendar, copy and paste this URL to your client's Subscribe feature.

Can you send me the presentation used for Pure training?

Why is the information about student supervision incomplete?

We are synchronising data about student supervision from the University’s student database, SITS. This data is integrated with staff information in the data warehouse and the results are shown as ‘student supervision’ in Pure. Thanks to existing helpdesk calls from users, we are aware that a number of these records are incomplete or otherwise inaccurate. We are working to correct this data but as this may have consequential impact on other University systems, the changes have to be carefully applied.

We have sought agreement from Research Degrees Committee, and University Research Committee, in order to establish which requested changes should be made. A meeting is planned with key stakeholders in late January 2013, after which time we hope to be able to start correcting the data and then reflect these changes in Pure.
