EXTRA OPENING HOURS BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR!

For the first time ever, the Main Library will be open between Christmas and New Year (27th, 28th and 31st December). It will also be open on Christmas Eve (24th December). Our library at Ninewells will be open on the same days. We hope that this will be a valuable service to those staff and students remaining in the Dundee area during the University's official closed period (Saturday 22nd December to Wednesday 2nd January inclusive). Check our Christmas Hours page for details.

Enhanced Study Facilities

Following a student consultation exercise on improving Library facilities, the Main Library will be extending opening hours on Friday and Saturday nights from Friday 16 November. The building will close at 2.30am (instead of 10pm). This represents a permanent change to semester opening hours and is a direct response to student comment and feedback.

There will also be additional study space made available within the LLC buildings as follows:

Main Library
Fairlie Room (Zone 2A) will be made available for general study purposes throughout the exam periods in November/December and again in April/May. This room has seating for 25 people.

Watson-Watt Room (Zone 1A) will be made available for general study purposes throughout the exam periods in November/December and again in April/May. This room has 15 PCs available.

Both these rooms will be available throughout Main Library opening hours.

DoJ Library, Matthew Building
The DoJ Library in the Matthew Building has now extended its opening hours to 8.45am to 9pm, Monday-Thursday (previously closing at 7.30pm). Friday 8.45am-5pm and Saturday 12pm-5pm remain unchanged.

It should also be noted that the Matthew/Crawford Buildings are generally open 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday.

In addition, and to alleviate student concerns that there may be pressure on study space in the Main Library building during exam times until the refurbishment of the ground floor in Summer 2013, the University has agreed to the following:

Scrymgeour Building
Level 3 mezzanine area and adjacent rooms (including a 14 PC IT Suite) will be opened on Monday 5th November for general study purposes. This arrangement will remain in place until summer 2013. The opening hours will be Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm. Access to the above space is from level 3 stairwell. There is also lift access to this space.

Tower IT Suites
A total of 241 PCs in the Tower Basement IT Suites will be open 9am to 9pm, 7 days a week during exam periods (but may be subject to bookings at certain times).

Dalhousie Building
The IT Suites in the Dalhousie Building will be open 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday during exam diets (but may be subject to bookings at certain times).

PC availability for all these facilities can be checked on the plasma screens in the Main Library building.

This extra provision will be in place until summer 2013.

Potential problem with emails from the Library

In some instances, courtesy and other notification emails from the Library & Learning Centre are being falsely identified as Spam. To avoid this we recommend that you check your dMail Junk E-Mail folder regularly. Any false-positives can be added to your Safe Senders list by right-clicking the message and selecting an option from the Junk E-Mail menu. False-positives can also be reported to dMail by following the instructions issued by ICS in the Report Spam section of their webpage.

We also strongly recommend that, for optimal management of your library account, you make use of the online My Library Card facility.

This free one-day event is firmly established as the UK’s largest conference focusing on technology-enhanced assessment practices. This year’s programme includes the internationally recognised keynote speaker Professor David Boud (University of Technology, Sydney), former Guardian Teacher of the Year David Miller, former Association of Learning Technology (ALT) ‘Learning Technologist of the Year’ Cristina Costa and the award-winning Russell Stannard.  The packed line-up also incorporates presentations, seminars, workshops, posters and the Scottish e-Assessment Awards.  Attracting educators and technology professionals from across Europe and beyond, this year’s conference is set to be the biggest yet.

Main Library lights out for Earth Hour

On Saturday 31st March, between 20.30 and 21.30, the main lights in the entrance area, InfoZone, café, atrium, and IT Suites on 1A and 2A will be switched off.

Lights in GB, 1B and 2B will remain on, and we recommend that you relocate to these areas if you do not wish to participate or be inconvenienced. All stairwells will remain lit.

If you are going to remain in the unlit areas please follow these basic guidelines:

  • Try to move about as little as possible
  • Keep all bags and coats well under your desk so that they do not present a trip hazard to yourself or others
  • Do not leave valuables (e.g. laptops, mobile phones) unattended

Further information about Earth Hour can be found on the WWF website, http://earthhour.wwf.org.uk/.

Main Library access control

From Monday 19th March tighter controls on entrance to the Main Library building are being introduced; please have your ID (matriculation) card with you at all times.

A number of recent security incidents in the Main Library have highlighted that some people are being allowed into the building who have no connection with the University. To try to create a safer and more secure study environment for staff and students of the University, therefore, LLC Senior Management have instructed the staff on the entry gate not to allow access to anyone who cannot prove they are a member of the University community. Patrons who don't have their ID card with them will be asked to complete a 'visitor registration form' to apply for a day pass. Each person will be allowed only 3 day passes per semester. After that, there will be no access to the building.

In addition, after 10pm Sunday - Thursday and after 6pm on Saturday there will be no access whatsoever to anyone not carrying a valid ID card. A "No Card - No Access" policy will be enforced and it will not be possible to register for a day pass at these times.

The new policy will come into force on Monday 19th March.

For information, the LLC will be introducing electronic access control gates for entry/exit of the building as part of a building refurbishment programme. So, getting used to carrying your card at all times *now* will prepare you for the introduction of a gate system in the future.

Thank you for your co-operation.

JISC Innovation Programme

The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) invites institutions to submit funding proposals for projects to implement and evaluate institutional change in technology-enhanced assessment and feedback.

The deadline for proposals is 12 noon UK time on Friday, 15 July 2011. It is envisaged that bidders will be notified of the outcome of the evaluation process in the week commencing 15 August 2011.

Funding is available for projects starting from 1 September 2011. Theme A projects (Institutional change) may run for up to three years, including a final unfunded year, and must complete by 31 August 2014. Theme B and C projects (Evidence and evaluation, and Technology transfer) may run for up to two years, and must complete by 31 August 2013. There is no absolute restriction in the call on institutions submitting more than one bid to strand A however since each project is meant to be tackling an issue of strategic significance to the institution, JISC would not expect to fund more than one bid per institution. Institutions are free to submit more than one bid under strands B and C, or to submit bids under each strand.

National Student Survey 2011

All final year undergraduate students will have received an email from Ipsos MORI inviting them to take part in the 2011 National Student Survey. This involves a short anonymous questionnaire and only takes about 5 minutes to complete online. This is a valuable opportunity for you to provide feedback on your learning experience. The University greatly appreciates this feedback which will both help to shape future provision and also help inform the decisions of future students contemplating going to university.

See the National Student Survey pages for more information and previous NSS survey results.

The results for all universities can be found on the Unistats website.
