Learning Conversations

Date(s)/Time(s) Wednesday 21 November, 10.00am - 12.00pm
Presenter(s) Graham Thomson, University of Edinburgh
Venue Dalhousie Building, Room 2F14
Places TBA

The Learning Conversations model is designed to enable rich and non-threatening conversations following teaching/lesson observations carried out by line managers and teaching colleagues. A development programme supports this. It is based on coaching and effective questioning methodologies. During the post lesson feedback session, descriptive rather than evaluative language is used by the observer. This professional, yet non-judgemental, approach allows an equitable relationship to be established between the observer and observee and is designed to encourage reflective thinking practices and strategies for self-evaluation. The results can be significant in developing improved learning and teaching approaches.

As a result of this short session participants will:

  • understand the focus in Learning Conversations on the learning of both colleagues, observer and observee, through observation and the dialogue that follows
  • learn how to use descriptive language in lesson observation to provide 'data' for rich and formative dialogues
  • use some simple coaching skills as part of lesson observation to empower colleagues to plan and implement their own development
  • explore their own learning through some highly practical, and hopefully engaging, collective activities focused on lesson observation and descriptive feedback
