Java Online

Date/Time: 25 January 2010 and will run for 10 weeks & 21 June 2010 and will run for 10 weeks

Venue: This module is delivered online (module AC11003). Module fee of £195 applies
Places: Online

Java Online is a 10 week online module (20 credits at SCQF level 7) which teaches you about Java, using the Internet and your own computer, plus a human tutor who is available via email, discussion board and web conference. The module is divided into 6 units, each of which lasts for 10 or 11 days, and which is delivered using a combination of self-presenting PowerPoints. Adobe Connect is the premier web conferencing solution, facilitating one-to-one or multiparty communication and collaboration over the web in real time. Features of this system include: live video and audio; interactive text chat; document, desktop and file sharing; and remote desktop control. This one hour instructor-led session introduces participants tothe system; provides a hands-on opportunity to experience web conferencing; and offers details on the support for use of Adabe Connect at the University of Dundee. This session will be of interest to academic or research staff wishing to support tutorials online or conduct online meetings between fellow researchers or project teams.

Introduction to EndNote

This workshop will give you hands-on experience of EndNote - the University's reference management system - which lets you store and organise references form a variety of sources including subject databases such as Medline, Scopus, Econlit, Art bibliographies modern. Users will learn how to Set up their own EndNote library, enter references and export references from relevant subject related databases and the Library catalogue Work between EndNote and Word to insert citations and create bibliographies and reference lists Reformat references into a variety of styles.

Learning & Teaching Online

Date/Time: Commences week beginning 1 February 2010 for 5 weeks
Presenter: Margaret Adamson Library Learning Centre
Venue: This module is delivered online via My Dundee

This online module, accredited at 10 SCQF (Masters level) points through the School of Education, Social Work & Community Education, comprises 5 weeks of online tuition (approximately 5 x 3 hours. Participants will be able to build on their understanding of e-learning through exploration of a weekly topic with associated tasks and activities. Specific topics include: instructural design, using collaboration and keeping legal. Each topic will be assessed through a combination of groupwork, individual reflection and production of an example VLE module.

Voice Care Course

Date/Time: Thursday 11 February 2010 2pm-4.30pm

This interactive workshop is aimed at all academic staff, especially those who give talks to conferences and lectures, or those who have found when teaching and lecturing that their voices are under strain.

The session will cover:

The importance of our voices in gaining and maintaining the attention of our listeners. How our speaking technique can assist the lecturer. Common difficulties that speakers have with their voices. Techniques that can assist them. Thinking about our stance and postures. What can we do to improve the lecturing environment? Pacing our efforts. The more effective us of microphones. Vocal warm ups.

There will be a short (3-5 minute) presentation from each participant - extracts from a current lecture topic - followed by feedback and comment from the tutor on use of voice, aspects of delivery etc. The presentation will cover action planning for maintenance of a healthy voice including exercises that can assist.

Introduction to Questionmark Perception

This 90 minute workshop provides tuition in the use of the leading online assessment software, Questionmark Perception. This introductory session is geared towards beginners and will demonstrate how to create questions and tests and how to deploy them online. No previous experience is required however staff who have used Questionmark in the past and are looking to refresh their skills are welcome to apply.

Advanced Questionmark Perception

This 90 minute workshop provides instruction relating to use of the more advanced features of the leading online assessment software, Questionmark Perception. This session is geared towards existing users and will demonstrate how to: create more sophisticated questions using question outcomes; improve reporting by adding/editing question outcomes; create assessments that include multiple blocks of questions; add conditional jump blocks to create adaptive tests; and improve feedback to students by reporting topic scores.

Assessment Online

Date/Time: Monday 8 March 2010 for 5 weeks

This module is targeted at those with an active interest in online assessment or interested in learning about the potential for assessing students online. Accredited at 10 SCQF (Masters level) points by the School of Education, Social Work & Community Education, the module takes the form of 5 weeks online tuition via My Dundee. The course will address both the pedagogical and practical aspects of designing and deploying assessments online. Participants must be able to dedicate 5-6 hours per week (depending on experience) to achieve the module learning outcomes. The module will examine the underlying philosophy of assessment and explore how online assessments can be used within courses. Topics and assignments will be presented on a weekly basis (two assignments per week) facilitating a progressive build up of knowledge and skills.

Effective Interactive Assessment - Turning Point

Questionmark Live!

Writing Effective Multiple Choice Questions
