We offer this support page to help users of the EndNote bibliographic reference manager software in importing records from Library e-resources. We have tested these procedures with EndNote X2 and X4, but they will probably work with other versions of EndNote too.
EndNote is available to all staff and students using the ICS Standard Operating Environment, and may be obtained from ICS for installation on other computers in the University. To use EndNote on your own computer outside the University you must purchase a personal licence from Adept Scientific. This can be done on-line using the following link.
Distance learning students and those working off-campus can set up a free account to use EndNote Web through our subscription to ISI Web of Knowledge, thus saving themselves the cost of buying EndNote through the software licensing scheme, currently anything between £68 and £83, depending on whether or not the licence and manual is wanted in hardcopy.
Further information can be found at the ISI web of Knowledge web site.
You can import records for books and journal articles into EndNote in one of two basic ways:
EndNote uses connection files to define links which allow you to search remote resources from within EndNote and to import records direct into EndNote. Although many connection files are distributed with EndNote, they do not cover all the resources available at the University of Dundee.
We have put together a package of connection files (a zip file) covering most major resources, including the University of Dundee Library catalogue. You can download it and copy the connection files for the resources you need into your connections folder in EndNote. If you are using the ICS Standard Operating Environment, these connections will have already been installed for you.
(last updated 30 July 2008)After downloading the zip file, open it, and double-click on the connection file you wish to install. It should open in EndNote: to save it in your installation of EndNote for future use, just choose from the menu File → Save As and save the file in the default location.
The connection files for most subscription databases will only work for computers on the campus network, but those for library catalogues and free resources like the RHS Bibliography should work anywhere.
For further information about connection files see the EndNote manual, available from the Help menu.
Most bibliographic databases allow you to download records in a form suitable for loading into EndNote, but the procedure is very different from one resource to another. Depending on the resource and how your web browser is configured, you may be able to open the records into EndNote straight from the web, or you may have to save them to disc and use the Import option from EndNote's File menu.
The table below gives a summary of the methods available for each resource.
