Main Library Redevelopment

The University has confirmed investment of £1.3m in the Main Library, to be phased over three years, in order to relocate the Law Library from the Scrymgeour Building to the Main Library, increase the capacity in the Main Library from 1100 to 1700 study places, refurbish the 'old' areas of the building and rationalise our stores.

Phase 1: Relocation of the Law Library

Phase 2: Redevelopment of the Ground Floor

Phase 3: Stores and further refurbishment

Phase 2: Redevelopment of the Ground Floor

UPDATE: November 2012

Preparations for Phase 2 of the redevelopment of the Ground Floor area are now underway.

The next phase is a complete redesign and refurbishment of the original Ground Floor of the Main Library (area GB), with the building work due to be carried out over Summer 2013.

The aim of this part of the work is to bring additional study space into student use by opening up the former Conservation Studio, the old entrance area, existing staff offices and book and special collection storage space.  The refurbishment will enable us to create up to 300 additional study spaces.

It's Your Library - Tell us what you think!

We recognise the importance of maintaining a variety of study spaces and diverse facilities which students require.  To help us achieve the best environment we want to find out what library users think in this initial planning phase.  A consultation process will be taking place over the next few weeks and you are encouraged to participate in any of the following:

Phase 1: Relocation of the Law Library

UPDATE: November 2012

Relocation of the Law Library completed September 2012.

New silent and collaborative spaces and PCs are in use, the Law Librarians' office and a high specification Presentation room are now operational.  The main purpose of this room is to support collaborative student working, and it features desktop power and data outlets, automatic projection and an interactive whiteboard.  It is open and available for anyone to use, subject to bookings.  Students and staff of the Law and Graduate Schools can book by emailing law-library@dundee.ac.uk.  Please see Guidelines for use.

It should be noted that the new Law Library area study spaces, PCs and materials are available for students in any discipline to use.

UPDATE: August 2012

The Law Library stock will be relocated to area 2B of the Main Library over the weekend of 1st/2nd September.  To prepare for this move the Law Library will be closed on Friday 31st August to allow for the stock to be packed.  The Law stock will be available for use, from area 2B of the Main Library on Monday 3rd September.

Work will continue in area 2B Monday 3rd September to Friday 7th September to complete the redevelopment of this area.

We apologise to all Library users for any inconvenience this work may cause.

Plans for the Law Library Relocation

This will take place between 12th June 2012 and early September 2012.  We will do our utmost to ensure that work is completed on time in order to minimise disruption at the start of semester.  The Law Library in the Scrymgeour Building will remain open until the books are transferred after building work is complete.

The plan shows the west section of the top floor in the Main Library which will become the dedicated Law Library. It will be divided off from the rest of the floor by two rows of shelving across the whole width of the floor, creating two distinct, clearly labelled entry points (green on the plan). The whole area will be re-decorated; the old wood panelling will be replaced by white walls, and there will be two coloured 'art walls'. A new carpet will further define the Law space.

When work is complete, the following benefits will be delivered:

Additional study spaces have been provided on the Ground Floor to allow for the spaces displaced by the new Law Library. We recognise that there may still be a shortfall during busy periods until the redevelopment of the Ground Floor is completed in September 2013, but this will be closely monitored. Further additional spaces will be provided if necessary.

The books on the 2nd floor (500-900) have been compacted to allow for the Law stock to be included. The Dewey sequence from 500 onwards will now start part way down the floor, from the Law Library division towards the extension end of the building.

What you need to know

We apologise for any noise or dust, but this will be inevitable.
