How do I join?

The University of Dundee Library & Learning Centre welcomes applications from all interested persons. Check Library regulations for your entitlement to membership, what proof of status is required and whether any payment must be made. Staff and students of the University don't need to do anything to join the Library: their details are uploaded automatically from Registry. All other members should download an application form and take it to any of our libraries together with any proof of status or payment required.

Where can I borrow?

Any member of the University of Dundee Library can visit and borrow from any of our sites.

What can I borrow?

Below are the main categories of borrower, although there are many others, each with their own borrowing allowance for more information, contact your nearest library!.

Journals are generally not for loan, however many are available online - check the Library catalogue for details (access to e-journals is also limited to University of Dundee members).

Renewing books

If, because of illness or other unforeseen events, you cannot return your books before their due date, please contact your nearest library as soon as possible so that we can try to ensure you do not incur a fine.

To renew books, there are several options. You can:

check and renew items issued to you through the Library catalogue - see below
phone the library to ask a member of staff to renew your books
bring them to any University of Dundee library and renew them on a self-service kiosk
email the Library

You will not be allowed to keep an item if:

it has been requested by another reader
it is a restricted loan item (e.g. 1, 5 or 7 day loan)
you have exceeded the limit on renewals
you owe money for overdue or lost books
the library has put a block on your record for some other reason

Please note that there is a limit on the number of times you can renew a book without bringing it to the library.

How do I check and renew my books online?

click on the Library catalogue link under Search your library
sign in from menu bar at top of screen using your Library barcode (on reverse of ID card) and password or your IT username and password
then go to My Library Card
select Loans and follow the instructions to renew

What if I can't find my book?

The Library catalogue will tell you whether any book is out on loan, and if out, when it is due back. Sometimes books are In according to the catalogue but are not on the shelves, because other people are using them at their desk. Also, you may be looking in the wrong part of the library (it may be on the Short Loan or Periodicals shelves) or at the wrong site, so check its Location and Copy Status carefully.

If you are unsure, please ask a member of staff for help.

How do I place a hold request?

If the item you want is on loan or only available at another site, you can place a Hold on it. When it is available we will contact you by email, and keep it aside for you for 5 days.

select the Library catalogue
then select Sign in from the menu bar at top of screen
log in using your barcode and password, or ICS username and password
search for the book you want to reserve and select location
then select All items in the holdings field
if the book is available for hold it will have a Request option in the left hand column. Don't worry about where each copy is or when it's due back, you'll get the first copy available
select Request, choose where you would like to pick the book up from the drop-down menu and fill in your "period of interest" in the book please note that if you enter a "from" date which is in the future this will delay the registration of your request and does not guarantee that the book will be available to you on that date!
select Go; a confirmation message will then appear on screen

If you are not able to place a Hold, this may be because:

your borrower category determines how many holds you can place at one time
holds may not be permitted on some restricted loan items

If you decide that you no longer require the book please cancel your hold by signing in, going to My Library Card, selecting Hold Requests and following the instructions to delete the hold

Short Loan booking information

The Short Loan collection contains items which are in high demand and can only be borrowed for short periods of time. All Short Loan items are kept behind the issue desk.

Short Loans are bookable for the following timeslots:

10am - 1pm
1pm - 4pm
4pm - 10am (at 4pm on a Friday the Short Loan item will be due for return at 10am Monday)

Key Information

you make a booking the same way as you place a hold - but in addition you choose which time slot you want
items can be booked up to two weeks in advance
up to 15 bookings may be placed at any given time
each item can only be booked once per day i.e. you can not book the item for each available slot in the day. You may borrow it during another slot provided no one else has booked it
items will be held for 1 hour after the start of the booking period, e.g. on a booking placed for the 4pm slot on Friday, if you have not already picked it up, the item will be held until 5pm. After this time, another reader may borrow the item
bookings can be made at any time within the booking period and will remain active for 1 hour, e.g. booking made at 2.20pm, will expire at 3.20pm
readers are allowed to borrow 2 Short Loan items at one time
if Short Loan items are returned late, a fine of 50p per hour will be charged
further sanctions will apply to any member who returns Short Loan items 24 hours late

What if I need the book urgently?

If you need to use a specific text and it is on loan to another user, then library staff can recall that item, giving the borrower one week to return it. You will be notified by email or post when it is available to you

Fines and other sanctions

There are fines for overdue items, and the University has a strict policy of pursuing debtors, so you should check regularly for anything due for renewal or return. Loan periods and fines in operation are posted at each University of Dundee library. We accept most credit/debit cards and cheques for payments over £5.

Further sanctions will apply to any member who returns Short Loan items 24 hours late. Their library privileges will be reduced for a period of six months so that, although they may still consult Short Loan items, they will be unable to remove them from the library.

Reciprocal agreements

The University of Dundee and the University of Abertay have a co-operative agreement to allow staff and students from both institutions to use and borrow from each others' libraries free of charge.

How do I join?

apply for authorisation to join Abertay's Library via Library & Learning Centre staff at the University of Dundee. The University will not approve your application if you have excess unpaid fines or have seriously infringed Library rules
if you are eligible, complete an application form, and get it authorised by your University of Dundee library
Abertay University Library is situated on Bell Street, next to Tayside Police Headquarters
take your authorised application form and your Dundee ID card to Abertay's Library. This will enable you to register for an Abertay Library card

As a member of Abertay University Library service, you will be subject to their policies and procedures, including paying fines for overdue items, and paying for any lost or misused items. University of Dundee staff and students are entitled to borrow up to six books for four weeks. You cannot borrow Short Loan books or other restricted loan items, and you will not be able to access electronic resources.

Staff and students at Dundee can also join St Andrews University Library. Please note that application to St Andrews should be made on weekdays between 9 and 5. Remember to take your Dundee matriculation card with you.
