About the EDC

Content of the collection

Dundee is a full European Documentation Centre, meaning that it is entitled to receive one copy of all publicly available documents released by the institutions of the European Union. Please note that some of the material may be in another official language of the Union, if an English edition was not available at the time of distribution.

Much of the current material pertaining to the European Union is now mounted on the internet, and is freely accessible to Dundee University staff and students from computer facilities throughout the University.

The most important official publications, according to source, are:

  1. Commission (the body which proposes and implements legislation):
General Report on the Activities of the European Union (annual), and its extracts
    Agricultural Situation in the Community
    Report on Competition Policy
Official Journal of the European Communities (C, L and S series)
    Bulletin of the European Communities
  2. Council of Ministers (the body which takes decisions on Commission proposals):
Review of the Council's Work (annual)
Annual Report of the ACP-EEC Council of Ministers
  3. European Parliament (the advisory body which monitors the work of the Commission and has co-legislative powers with the Council in certain instances)
The debates, minutes and oral and written questions of the parliament are published in the C series of the Official Journal of the European Communities up to 1999
Reports and opinions of the parliamentary committees
  4. Court of Justice (the judicial body set up to interpret and apply Community law based on the founding treaties)
Proceedings of the Court of Justice of the European Communities
Reports of Cases before the Court

Publications are also received from the Court of Auditors, the European Investment Bank, the Committee of the Regions, official agencies of the European Union, and the Union's statistical publisher Eurostat (n.b. the supply of hard-copy statistics to EDCs is restricted).
