Predicaments in Prints: caring for our printed heritageAn exhibition in the Tower Foyer Gallery, University of Dundee Conserving printed matter forms a major part of the work of the Book & Paper Conservation Studio, situated in the Main Library of the University of Dundee. The conservators at the Studio combine knowledge of arts and science to preserve our heritage: finding solutions to an object’s problems to stabilise the material, extend its life and allow it to tell its story once more. ‘Predicaments in Prints’ celebrates 500 years of printing in Scotland by showcasing examples of work carried out at the Studio on printed material; from artworks whose visual impact and physical condition have been compromised to antiquarian books with fascinating historical appeal.

The Book & Paper Conservation Studio hosted an Institute of Conservation, Scotland Group one-day seminar on the topic of Health and Safety. The course was instructed by Martin J Adlem, an extremely experienced freelance health and safety consultant, who tailored the day for 24 delegates from a range of disciplines, from paper to aircraft conservation. It was designed to give an overview of their responsibilities under UK health and safety legislation and guidance managing health and safety risks. The topics covered included the law, risk assessment, chemical safety, manual handling, working at height and fire safety, with plenty of opportunity for discussion. Delegates travelled from as far as Manchester and Northern Ireland to attend and feedback from this interesting day has been universally positive. Past events: |
