- What is QuestionMark Perception?
QuestionMark Perception (QMP), is a software package used to produced
assessments for online delivery. The software
allows a range of different question types to be created, multimedia
components can be included, and feedback entered on the responses
chosen (i.e. correct
and wrong answers).
- How
do I obtain a copy of the Questionmark Perception authoring
software?
You can obtain a copy of the Questionmark Perception
author software by emailing the e-assessment team at caa@dundee.ac.uk.
You will then be sent a CD which includes instructions
on the installation of the software along with a number
of other resources which may be helpful when you come
to author your own questions.
- Do
I need to obtain a licence to run Questionmark Perception
on my PC?
A temporary licence is initially available on installation.
This 30 day licence should be replaced
with the University's institutional licence

- I wish to learn more about online assessment and how to create my own assessments using Questionmark Perception. How can I achieve this?
The Learning Centre offers a number of staff development
courses to support staff who wish to use online
assessment within their teaching. Assessment
Online is a five week accredited course, delivered fully online
via Blackboard, which focuses on the pedagogical
and technical skills required to deliver assessments
online. The course runs each semester
and is next scheduled to run on the 20th of October
2008. For more information please contact Dr
David Walker in the Learning Centre. In addition,
look out for short workshops on the Academic
Professional Development website. Face-to-face
training is also available on request.
- When
I create my questions and assessments should
I observe any specific naming
conventions?
A consistent naming structure is advisable.. We recommend
that questions are organised into logical topic and
that assessments names contain both module code and
(academic) year in which it is created for example, ED50015 Assessment
Theory 0809.
- What
is the recommended browser for use
with online assessments?
You are recommended to use Internet Explorer 6 or above.

Yes. Questionmark can be used with a MacOSX.
Question and Assessment
Design
- How do I create questions?
Before creating questions you must first create or have access to a
topic. Topics enable you to organise questions by theme. Select
the topic and then right click and choose Add Question. A wizard
will be displayed that will lead you through the steps of creating
yor questions.
- Once the questions are created is that them ready for the students to access?
No, you then have to create an ‘assessment’ in an assessment folder. Click
on Assessment View to view your assessment folders. Create/select
the relevant assessment folder and right click and chose Add Assessment.
The Add Assessment wizard enables you to make a
number of selections
relating to your assessment. For example, you have created a bank
of 100 questions, you can choose 20 specific questions
for a particular test, or you can set the system to choose the questions
randomly. You can also set a time limit and whether or not you
require specific assessment
outcomes to be achieved i.e pass mark of 60%.
- How to I put my assessment online?
You should email caa@dundee.ac.uk with details of the assessment
that you wish to go online. The QMP administrator will publish
your assessment
to the server and will make it available within the Blackboard
module (formative assessment only) at a time and date that you
specify.
You will
be asked to test the assessment prior to release to students.
For details on procedures for summative assessments please see
the University
of Dunde
e-Assessment Policy and Procedures.
- Is copyright important?
Yes. If you have found a graphic or other resource on the Internet you wish to use in your questions, you should:
• Contact the website or resource owner (usually via email)
• State that you would like to use the resource and that it is for academic purposes for a computer assisted assessment within a password protected environment on the Internet.
• If you receive permission it is good practice to still credit the source of the graphic, the standard text for this is, ‘reproduced by permission of . . . ‘. If you do not receive permission you are advised not to use the resource in your assessment.
• Keep a copy of all email correspondence you receive relating to copyright.
- How do I access reports on my assessments?
Reports on assessments are run from within Enterprise Manager.
To access Enterprise Manager you should login to Blackboard
and enter the relevant module through which the assessment
was delivered. Click
on Control Panel>Questionmark> Enter Questionmark. You should now have
access to the powerful reporting capabilities of QMP. Reports on summative
exams
must be run on the exam server. Please
contact a QMP administrator who will provide you with a login.
