Academic Student Skills
This Level 1 module is offered to students in three of the University Colleges: Arts and Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Architecture, Science and Engineering. It is offered in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2 and is rated at 20 Points. Although it is a Level 1 module, it is open to first and second year students. Exceptionally, third year students may also take this module.
When numbers permit, the course in any semester is divided into two groups working sometimes in tandem and sometimes independently. These groups, one for first year students and the other for students in years 2 and 3, follow the same syllabus. However, some adjustments are made to take into account the newness of university study in the case of first year students, and to build on the experience of those students who have been in the University for longer.
P@SS addresses a whole range of activities and challenges that confront undergraduates and is designed to support learning in other academic subjects. Thus, it encourages students to take a longer view of the academic year and to the level of work they will be expected to produce. The course activities show students ways in which they can manage coursework in all their subjects and, in this way, make learning easier. The aim is to help students to develop strategies and approaches that help achieve success and attain the best marks they can.
The course is designed to lead new and not-so-new students through a series of activities such as note-taking, academic writing, participating in tutorials, tackling module assessments, including presentations, and much more. The course is assessed through classroom-based and e-learning activities in addition to a traditional exam. Students work towards reflecting on their individual learning styles and how they can transfer and integrate their P@SS learning into their other modules.
