Biography
Alasdair MacLean originally qualified in medicine in 1987 and converted to law in 1997. He then went to the University of Durham where he undertook research into the dilemma of non-consensual treatment of pregnant women, which led to the award of the degree of Master of Jurisprudence. In 1999 he started a PhD at the University of Southampton looking at the legal regulation of consent to medical treatment and the competent adult patient.
In 2001 he moved to the University of Glasgow, where he worked for four years as lecturer in medical law and ethics. He moved to the University of Dundee in June 2005, as a senior lecturer in law, where he is currently teaching medical law to undergraduate law students. He is the director of the LL.M in Healthcare Law and Ethics

Postgraduate:- Distance Learning LLM Healthcare Law and Ethics
He offers postgraduate supervision in the field of most medical law topics including, consent and autonomy, incapacity, treating children, medical negligence, clinical research, end of life issues, abortion, and fetal status and protection.
Research
This is focused on medical law and ethics. He has recently completed a PhD Thesis on Consent to Medical Treatment and is continuing to research the legal protection of autonomy; advance directives; and law, responsibility and justice in medical law.
