Research Degrees

LLM and Ph.D Programmes

The School of Law welcomes applications to our two programmes: the Masters by research (LL.M.) and the Ph.D programmes. Both programmes afford the opportunity to conduct in depth research into an area of law of your own choosing and the chance to work closely, on a one to one basis, with a supervisor who specialises in that area of law.

Learning and Teaching

The research LL.M is studied for one year on a full time basis and 2 years on a part time basis, while the research Ph.D lasts 3 years full time, and 5 years part time.

Both the LL.M by research and the Ph.D by research aim to enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of a selected area of law and to develop their legal research skills. Candidates are supervised by a specialist in their area, with whom they meet regularly for critical discussion and guidance, and a second supervisor who provides assistance and guidance as appropriate on the production of a thesis. The length of dissertation required depends upon the degree undertaken:

LL.M 30,000 to 40,000 words / Ph.D 80,000 to 100,000 words

Candidates are required to undergo a certain amount of training at the same time as carrying out their research. This training is designed to ensure that students are equipped to complete their research, to address generic skills needs and to afford an opportunity to meet with and form part of a vibrant community of postgraduate students. For Ph.D candidates training includes attendance at the Postgraduate Induction Course, attendance at regular Ph.D seminars, training workshops and other events. For LL.M by research candidates, training programmes will be agreed with their supervisor.
