Information about Postgraduate Programmes

Taught Masters Degrees: International Human Rights Law

Module Convenors: Professor Robin Churchill (r.r.churchill@dundee.ac.uk) Room 4.12

The module aims to provide students with an introduction to the very large body of law and institutions that exist at the international level (both global and regional) to protect and promote human rights. The first seminars will be devoted to an overview of the many treaties and other instruments that establish global and regional human rights norms, looking at the reasons for their development, the different kinds of rights and the various mechanisms that exist for trying to secure compliance with such norms. Later seminars will focus on specific human rights - such as the right to life, freedom of expression, the right to housing, freedom of religion, the rights of women, and equality and non-discrimination - and examine the ways in which these rights are protected at both the global and regional level.

The module will be taught by means of eight two-hour seminars, for which students will be expected to undertake extensive preparation. There will also be a one-hour introductory seminar in the first week of the semester and a one-hour revision seminar at the end of the semester. The module will be assessed 50% by coursework and 50% by written examination.
