Taught Masters Degrees: International and Comparitive Human Rights and Civil Liberties

Module Convenor: Dr Patrick Ford (p.z.ford@dundee.ac.uk) Room 4.11

This is a second semester module. The method of assessment is 50% coursework and 50% written examination.

This module examines both the institutional and legal methods of human rights protection and the relationship between them. It begins with an examination of rule of law concepts, ideas about good governance and the importance of an independent judiciary. It goes on to examine both international and national mechanisms for protecting human rights, how they interact with each other and what happens when international law conflicts with national constitutional law.  The module will be taught through secondary materials and case studies drawn from a variety of jurisdictions.
