The School has an increasing number of students opting for an LL.B degree containing all the subjects required by the Law Society of Scotland, the Solicitors Regulation Authority for England and Wales, and the Bar Vocational Council for England and Wales. This gives students dual qualification in Scots law and English law.
On graduating with this degree, students have a choice of jurisdictions where they can study for their postgraduate professional qualification prior to entering the practitioner training stage. Dundee Law School graduates with the dual qualifying degree can also become fully qualified more quickly as a solicitor in any of the jurisdictions of the UK.
In the modern world, in-depth knowledge of more than one jurisdiction gives Dundee dual qualifying graduates a significant competitive advantage in the market-place, as well as maximising the flexibility of their law degree throughout their careers.
The bespoke dual qualifying degree is designed for students enrolled on the Scots LLB whose curriculum is extended to incorporate all the subjects required for professional qualification by the English regulatory bodies. Students take these additional subjects in the final two years of an honours degree, thus offering a genuinely comparative approach to the study of law. As it is a demanding degree, admission to the dual qualifying degree is carefully assessed to ensure those enrolled have an appropriate academic record of performance.
English LLB stream students are also able to select Scots modules within their curriculum but, due to the heavier demands of the Law Society of Scotland syllabus, usually need an extra year after graduation to complete the Scots subjects. In addition, English LLB stream students take modules in Evidence and Mercantile, required for practice in Northern Ireland, providing graduates with an additional choice of jurisdiction.
