JOURNAL FOR TRANSATLANTIC STUDIES
Editor: Prof. Alan P. Dobson
Introduction
The Journal of Transatlantic Studies is multi and interdisciplinary, publishing articles with a focus on the transatlantic region as an area with a distinct character and a rich history. It will bring together in one publication various foci of study and disciplines:
- Political science
- Comparative constitutionalism
- International relations
- Security studies
- History
- Literature and culture
- Geography and population studies
- Planning and environment
While the majority of articles will almost certainly be on North American relations with Europe, there will be an editorial policy of including at least one article per edition dealing with Spanish, or Portuguese or French speaking America (Dutch speaking America/Caribbean will be dealt with on a case by case basis).
This will at least go some way to redress the imbalance of concentration on European relations with North America and the emphasis might be shifted further over time towards Spanish, French and Portuguese speaking relationships, depending on demand and the quality of manuscript submissions.
Aims and Scope
Journal of Transatlantic Studies will cover the following areas:
- Comparative politics and constitutionalism
- International Relations and Security Studies
- Political Economy
- Political, diplomatic, economic,and international business history
- Area studies, transmission of ideas and migration
- Geographical Area of Study
Europe and its interactions with North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean. (The definition of Europe includes Russia and editorial policy would be suitably flexible about the African margin, depending on content and quality of submissions.)
Period of Study
It is envisaged that most contributions will be about post 1945 or contemporary affairs, but articles covering any period of transatlantic relations would be welcomed providing that they have some contemporary resonance.
Selection Criteria for Publication
Manuscripts will be anonymously assessed by two referees who will be asked to judge whether they are:
- to be published;
- referred for minor amendment;
- referred for major amendment;
- rejected
In difficult cases, or where a manuscript is concerned with a subject that does not fall fully within the normal scope of the journal, the opinion of a third referee will be sought and the editor and associate editors will consult.
Frequency and Format
The journal will be published twice yearly with 6 articles of 7,000 words on average (going to 3 issues a year when established). There will be no prejudice against longer articles of 10,000 words and above if quality justifies publication.
Such articles would clearly have to be balanced by shorter pieces of 4-5,000 words. A short book review section, covering between 5-10 books per issue, will be included. Individual subscribers automatically become members of the Transatlantic Studies Association.
