Reflecting our continued commitment to support and develop excellence in the study of sport and exercise, ise staff make a significant contribution to the development and delivery of the University’s BSc degree in Sports Biomedicine.  Our staff currently deliver within two of the three key focus areas of this degree programme:

1.  Exercise and Training Science:

  • Understanding and enhancing athletic performance in sport.
  • The research and support in this area is directly applied within the coaching framework to improve elite sporting performance. 
  • Areas covered include Sports Physiology, Science of Coaching, Sports Psychology and Sports Biomechanics.

2.  Clinical Exercise Science:  

  • Combining the study of physical activity and exercise for the prevention and management of disease states.
  • This area takes a practical approach, allowing students to have a real life experience of using exercise to prevent & manage disease.
  • Areas covered include benefits and risks associated with exercise, health screening and risk stratification, exercise testing and prescription and improving motivation and adherence.

The third key teaching area, Molecular Exercise Physiology covers the mechanisms responsible for the adaptation of cells and organs to exercise and the genetic determinants of athletic talent.  This is delivered by staff from within the School of Life Sciences
