flamenco

flamenco dancing can improve your stamina, strength and posture, but that’s not why we do it! the essence of flamenco is expressed through a combination of clapping, fluid arm and hand movements, along with intricate sequences of percussive footstamps. explore the power and passion of this profoundly expressive art.

beginners/improvers: an introduction to fundamental flamenco techniques and exercises: includes posture, body alignment, percussive footwork (zapateado), arm and hand movements (brazeos/ floreo) and rhythmic handclapping (palmas). classes will explore a short choreography to gain basic understanding of various compas (rhythmic structure) and the underlying expression associated with a particular dance. wear hard soled shoes (no stilettoes) and clothing that allows unrestricted movement.

intermediate/advanced: (2 to 3 years minimum experience) once you’ve mastered the basics and are ready to move on to more advanced work, this class aims to challenge and stretch those ready for advanced choreography. you’ll expand interactive and performance skills, refine technique and deepen your understanding of the various forms. if you’re not sure of your ability then check with Linda the class teacher.
