University Nursery
Students and staff are eligible to apply for a place at the University of Dundee nursery located in the Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) building. This provides a maximum of 40 places for children aged between 2-5 years and helps prepare children for entry into primary education: www.dundee.ac.uk/studentservices/childcare
Places are available full-time or part-time, booked per semester in advance. There is often a waiting list so we are unable to guarantee an on demand service and you are advised to enquire and apply early. Children under 2 can be added to the waiting list in advance. The nursery is registered with the Childcare Voucher Scheme.
Local Nursery Schools
To enrol your child at a local nursery school you should contact the school directly to find out about places, and their enrolment process. A list of local nursery schools can be found on the Dundee City Council website www.dundeecity.gov.uk/education/nurseries
Primary Schools
Applications for primary school places can only be submitted once you are in the country. Application forms are available from Dundee House, 50 North Lindsay Street, Dundee DD1 1NL. This should be completed and returned to Dundee House, along with:
- original birth certificate of the child/children
- proof of address (dated within the last 2 months)
- relevant passports / visa / identity cards for the child and parents
- any other documents requested on the application form
Once the application has been received the Primary Team will be able to confirm if suitable places are available.
Secondary Schools
Applications for secondary school places can only be submitted once you are in the country. Application forms are available from Dundee House, 50 North Lindsay Street, Dundee DD1 1NL. This should be completed and returned to Dundee House, along with:
- original birth certificate of the child/children
- proof of address (dated within the last 2 months)
- relevant passports / visa / identity cards for the child and parents
- any other documents requested on the application form
Bilingual Pupils Support Service

Access to Learning
Access to Learning is a project for minority ethnic parents who have children aged 0-5 years. This project is aimed at improving the transition from home to school for minority ethnic children, engaging their parents/carers in the early education of their children, and promoting the value of ethnic minority languages and culture within early years’ education. Translation and Interpretation Service
Dundee City Council has a translation and interpretation service that can offer interpreting in a range of languages. You can contact this service by phoning 01382 435825 or email translation@dundeecity.gov.uk. University International Families Group
The University International Families Group meet every Wednesday morning during the university term time from 10:00am to 1:00pm in the Chaplaincy Centre (No 31 on the campus map) near the library. It is an opportunity to meet and make new friends, with toys available for children and free refreshments.

Dundee International Women’s Centre
The DIWC has been around for nearly 40 years, and aims to promote and create opportunities for women from varied social, cultural and religious backgrounds. The centre has over 450 users from 54 countries, speaking over 20 different languages and representing 15 different faiths. The Centre has a multicultural crèche for pre-school children, youth projects for young women from the age of 12 to 21, and an over 50s group.
The Centre runs programmes such as English language classes, cooking classes and IT skills classes for women of all ages.
The Centre is open Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm at Unit 9, Manhattan Business Park, Dundonald Street, Dundee, DD3 7PY. Further information can be found at www.diwc.co.uk
Parent and Child Groups
The Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre (DCA) has "Bring a Baby" film showings for parents with young babies. Details can be found on the DCA website, www.dca.org.uk/whats-on/films/category/bring-a-baby-53.html
Bring a Baby screenings are exclusively for people taking care of babies under 12 months old. You can bring your buggies and prams into the cinema and we provide changing mats too. Screenings are exclusively for adults with a baby who is 12 months or under. No more than two adults per baby, please.
Dundee City Council’s Leisure & Communities Department organises multicultural parent child and baby groups and various family learning group sessions. They provide support and encouragement to parents in engaging more fully in their children’s learning through group activities. For further information please contact Komal Pawar on 01382 435813.
The Gate Church on Perth Road has a Little Angels parent and toddler group. This group meets every Thursday morning from 10am – 12am during school term time. It provides a safe and fun environment for children under 5 years of age. The group has a small parents’ library and all facilities are free of charge. Further information can be found here:

English Classes
Dundee College offers full and part time courses leading to internationally recognised English language qualifications. Information about fees and how to apply can be found on Dundee College’s website and pages for international students: www.dundeecollege.ac.uk/International
The Mitchell Street Centre Adult Learning Team offers English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tuition for adults whose first language is not English, as well as literacy and numeracy groups for those who wish to improve their reading, writing, spelling and maths skills. The Centre also offers free internet access and has a crèche.
