General Questions

What is UoD WiFi?

The UoD WiFi Network Service provides users with a wireless connection to the University network using a suitably specified and configured laptop. The service is designed to provide mobility and flexibility in the support of learning and teaching. However, it does not bring all the benefits and speed of connecting to the network via a wired connection.

Can I connect to UoD WiFi with a Windows 8 laptop or other device?

We do not currently support wireless connectivity using Windows 8 devices. There may be issues with connecting to UoD WiFi.

We are planning to upgrade the wireless infrastructure to support Windows 8 in December 2012 when there will be less impact to teaching.

Sharing Laptops

Are my login credentials stored on my laptop? (Windows XP Only)

Your login credentials (ie your standard University of Dundee username & password) are stored in your laptop, and are used every time your laptop connects, after you first successfully log on to the UoD WiFi Network Service. Because of this you will be logged in automatically every time you connect to the UoD WiFi Network Service and you are ultimately responsible for abiding by the University's computing regulations and policies.

I am planning to allow another user to use my laptop. Is there anything I need to know?

If you allow another user to use your laptop you are required to clear your credentials every time, both before and after anyone else uses it.

Equipment/Technical Questions

Where can I update my laptop with critical updates?

Where can I obtain anti-virus software for my laptop?

University Policy requires that a suitable anti-virus product is used and regularly updated on all computers (Windows, Macintosh and other operating systems) connected to the University of Dundee network.

Anti-virus software is available for download to all University of Dundee staff and matriculated students free of charge. Futher help and advice is also on ICS' Virus Protection webpages including useful information about recent threats and hoaxes.

Note: You should only have one anti-virus software running per laptop. Any old AV software must be removed through the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel

Can I borrow a suitable wireless card?

This is no longer available.
