Frequently Asked Questions - Virus Protection
Software installation questions
I have installed VirusScan Enterprise and now some of my networked applications no longer work
properly
This is due to the new version of software installing port blocking software that
blocks a number of ports (25, and 6666 - 6669) on the installed system. Known applications so
far are Aleph port 25 and Ghost Console 6666, 6667.
To allow your application to use these ports: -
- On your PC, right-click the VShield icon in the system tray and select
VirusScan Console.
- In the Task List, double-click Access Protection.
- Double click on the relevant rule that is blocking your application.
- In the default settings this should be either mass mailing worms or
IRC communication.
- Then enter the name of the process for your application.
- This may be found in the application documentation or can be found using windows task
manager. Click on ctrl, alt and esc, select your application, right click and
select Go to Process. The process name is highlighted.
- Click on ok.
- If your application uses ports 6666-6669 and default settings for access protection are
applied. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the second entry labelled Prevent IRC Communication.
- Then click on apply.
The documentation that comes with your application may provide you with the relevant port numbers
used, otherwise it's a case of trial and error adding the applications process to the correct
port blocking rule.
