Room Connection

This information explains how to connect once you are in your room..

Are there forms to fill out to gain access to the network connection in my room?

No - Your connection is ready to go - providing your device is suitable and you have the correct type of UTP cable.

I didn't bring a network cable with me - where can I get one?

A cable is provided for you in your room. This should not be unplugged. If you suspect it is faulty please report this to ICS Service Desk

If you need a longer cable, you should leave the provided cable in place. You can purchase an RJ45 coupler and CAT5 UTP cable to extend the provided cable. Suitable cables are stocked at The Premier Store on the University Campus (part of the Student Union complex) which also stocks a limited range of other IT consumables such as CDs, USB memory clips, 1.8m printer cables and power plug adapters. You can also buy network cables from any reputable computing store in town.

How do I actually connect to the network in my room?

Take the following steps;

  • Find the cable which is plugged into the wall port.
  • Connect the free end of this cable into the network port on your PC or laptop.
  • Switch on your PC or laptop - log into your system (if required).
  • Within 1 minute of logging on your computer should automatically detect your connection and allocate an IP address.
  • Your computer should now be connected to the network - you can test this by connecting to a web browser - eg Internet Explorer, Firefox.
  • Please note - the network connection in your room is 'always on' - unlike some home broadband connections there is no log-in or password required.

If your computer does not connect please refer to our Problem Solving section.

NB: A paper copy of our connection guide, Network Connection in Your Room - How to get Connected to the Network, will be available in your Hall of Residences Reception and you can access them online using the University IT facilities in the Library, Tower Building and Matthew Building. You could also check with a flatmate who already has a connection.
