My Computer - Including Security – A/V Updates

The information contained in this page is designed to provide guidance on the amount of devices you can connect in your University of Dundee accommodation – and how to keep them secure on the network.

I have a laptop and a PC; can they both be connected in my room?

Yes - you may have up to three devices connected to the network socket in your room e.g. laptop, PC and an X Box. However all three cannot be connected simultaneously.

How do I keep my computer protected from viruses and hackers?

You must ensure that you have up-to-date anti-virus software and the latest Windows Updates installed. The University has a licensed anti-virus program (McAfee) which is available for users of the University of Dundee network to download. We would also recommend you regularly run a program that enables you to scan your computer for spyware. You should also follow simple rules such as not downloading anything you are unsure of even if someone you know has sent it to you.

What are Windows Updates and why are they important?

Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft which provides updates for the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. The updates protect users of Windows systems with protection against “malware”, computer “worms” and system vulnerabilities.

It is your responsibility to ensure that updates are current.

How do I run Windows Updates?

The first time you do the procedure, it may take a 'long time'. Do not be put off - this is IMPORTANT.

We recommend that you set your Windows operating system to automatically receive updates - further information is available here
