ResNet - IT in Residences

This webpage provides information about using your computer or laptop in University of Dundee residences and is aimed at student applicants for Residences accommodation.

For information on how to get connected in your room, please refer to the information in the left-hand navigation. Or look at our Quick Guide

Computer connections

Your bedroom has a cabled network outlet to enable you to use the University's high speed computer network. The cost of the connection is included in your rent and connecting your own computer/laptop in your room in residences can be arranged at any time throughout the academic year. Use of the Internet and all other services is subject to the University's acceptable use policies.

Please note that, if your laptop meets the prerequisites, you can use a wireless connection in all learning and teaching areas and in some social areas eg DUSA - this service is not available in your room. See our UoD_WiFi Networking Service pages.

Using your own laptop or computer

Once connected, you can access the Internet, My Dundee (the University's virtual learning environment VLE) and your University email.

University Policy requires that a suitable anti-virus product is used and regularly updated on all computers connected to the University of Dundee network. Other security requirements, such as relevant operating system security updates and service packs, are detailed in the University's policies. You should ensure your computer / laptop meets these requirements before connecting to the network.

Supporting your computer/laptop

ICS will provide information to help you get connected in your room.

You are advised to bring with you to the University all your CDs (eg Recovery/Restore disks, original operating system and driver disks) as well as the licences for software and any information regarding warranty for your IT hardware. This will help you if you have any problems.

This website (ResNet - www.dundee.ac.uk/ics/resnet/) is updated regularly, so please come back and check it often for new information.

If you have any questions or concerns about using this service please feel free to contact the ICS Service Desk, the single point of contact for all IT related queries and service requests.
