Microsoft Select Scheme

What is the Microsoft Select scheme?

The University of Dundee has an agreement with  CHEST (the Combined Higher Education Software Team), also known as EDUSERV, with Microsoft, and with a designated Microsoft Reseller. This enables us to sell individual Microsoft software products at much reduced prices to University departments.

The software covered is a large proportion of all software produced by Microsoft, although it does not cover everything.

Different to the University's Campus Agreements, which are essentially renewable rental agreements, MS Select allows departments to purchase and use software for as long as they wish.

The agreement is administered on the University's behalf by ICS. This is unrelated to site licensing, as Microsoft does not sell site licences.

How can I access the Microsoft Select scheme?

We advise that you firstly check that the software you want is not already licensed under the University's Campus Agreements. This is the most cost effective way of accessing licensed software.

If the software you are looking for is not available under Campus Agreements check the product list on the CHEST site to find out if it's available that way, then simply submit a purchase order to ICS Reception and we'll order it in for you. Note: Requests cannot be accepted from individuals, nor can licences be sold for cash, but only against internal University of Dundee purchase orders.

What are the conditions of purchasing a licence?

  1. The University, not the individual, is the licensee of the software.
  2. Individual Staff Members are permitted to copy software for home use, for a narrow range of products including Office and Office Pro components eg Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Other restrictions apply;
    • If you have a laptop and a home desktop computer, you must choose on which you want to use the Microsoft software.
    • If your work machine is used by more than one person, only the "primary user" is allowed to copy the software and use it at home (or on a laptop).
    • The work you do at home, or on your laptop, must be "University work-related".
  3. Orders cannot be accepted from a Health Board or Trust, or another external body. This scheme is administered by the University, for the benefit of the University.
  4. The cost of the licences does not include distribution media ie DVDs, CD-ROMs or Diskettes, or manuals - these must be ordered separately. ICS Reception normally keep stocks of most popular software eg Office Pro and Windows.
  5. Licences are "in perpetuity". This means that when the agreement ends, you and your department can keep using the software. This does not include upgrades of any kind - these must be purchased separately.
