Laptops

Three models of laptop, an Entry Level laptop, Corporate laptop and an Ultra Portable laptop are available.

All are supplied by Lenovo and come with network, modem and wireless cards and fully configured operating systems. Some aspects of a new laptop need to be configured by ICS (for SOE users)(link to config page) or by your departmental IT support staff.

Entry Level Laptop

This laptop is a low-cost option for users who require a laptop for occasional remote working and access to email, web-browsing and Microsoft Office.

It should not be used as an alternative to a desktop PC as it offers no facilities for a docking station. The SOE cannot be installed on this laptop.

This laptop has to be ordered in for each user from our supplier. This will take approximately 10 working days.

Corporate Laptop

The Corporate Laptop is recommended for moderate to heavy use. It can be used as an alternative to a desktop PC along with a docking station for plugging in a monitor, keyboard and mouse; which is recommended when using a laptop regularly.

From Spring 2012 this laptop will be readily available and can be set up with a University image and delivered to a user within 3 days. For now, this laptop can be ordered from our suppliers and will be delivered in 10 working days.

Ultraportable Laptop

This laptop offers also the features of the corporate laptop but is lighter, due to a built in docking station and smaller (12.1”) screen.

From Spring 2012 this laptopwill be readily available and can be set up with a University image and delivered to a user within 3 days. For now, this laptop can be ordered from our suppliers and will be delivered in 10 working days.

Do you need the SOE on your laptop?

The Corporate or Ultraportable Laptop can support a dual boot configuration which means that the SOE can be made available on these laptops.

What screen size do you require?

Entry Level Laptop – 15.6” widescreen

Corporate Laptop – 14.0” widescreen *

Ultraportable Laptop – 12.1” widescreen *

*can be used on a docking station with a monitor

Do you need to use your laptop with a docking station for easy connection to a monitor, keyboard and mouse?

The Entry Level Laptop cannot be used in conjunction with a docking station.

The Corporate Laptop can be used with a docking station (to be ordered as a separate item).

The Ultraportable Laptop has a built in docking station.

Do you require an ultra-lightweight laptop?

The Ultraportable laptop is our lightest laptop at 1.56kg (including a 6-cell battery).

Do you require a laptop only occassionally?

Our Entry Level Laptop is suitable for occasional remote working and is suitable for using email, Microsoft Office and web-browsing.

Do you need a DVD-writer on your laptop?

A DVD-writer can be added as an upgrade to the Corporate and Ultraportable Laptops but these will have to be ordered directly from the supplier and will take 10 working days.

The option of a DVD-writer upgrade is not available on the Entry Level Laptop.

Configuration, Support, Warranty & Insurance

Configuration

There are 2 options available when ordering laptops through ICS:

Option 1 - Dual boot (Corporate and Ultraportable Laptops only)

Office partition - SOE (Standard Operating Environment) - fully configured Windows XP secure operating environment with comprehensive software portfolio, supplied to Schools and Departments already set up for SOE use.
XP Starter, Windows XP, configured for secure Windows and Anti-virus updates and installed with office productivity tools (MS OFFICE), internet browser (Internet Explorer) and University email. You can configure this further for your own use.

Option 2 - Single boot (All laptops)

XP Starter, Windows XP, configured for secure Windows and Anti-virus updates and installed with office productivity tools (MS OFFICE), internet browser (Internet Explorer) and University email. You can configure this further for your own use.

Non - Standard Options

Bespoke requirements\ optional extras are not delivered from stock and will take longer - anticipated delivery 10 - 15 working days.

Support

We recommend that you seek advice from your School\Department IT support staff or contact ICS Service Desk before purchasing a laptop.

Warranty

Our suppliers offer a 3 years, on-site warranty for the Corporate and Ultraportable laptops and 2 year, return to base warranty for the Entry Level Laptop.
