Password FAQs

These frequently asked questions (FAQ) aim to answer the most common questions users might have about passwords. If you have a question that isn't answered please let us know by completing our short feedback form.

How should I change my password?

It is recommended you use the Password Management Portal to change your password. You can also use this facility to register challenge answers so in the event you forget your password you can reset your password yourself. See the Password Management Portal service pages (link) for more information.

You can also use a Windows based PC with a suitable 'Novell Client for Windows' installed.

How should I choose my password?

It is recommended you choose a secure password. This should be known only to you and be unguessable by anyone else. A good password will have upper case and lower case letters. It will also contain some numbers. It should be memorable (but not your car registration number or similar). For example, a good choice could be 'iw45oMLb' which would be remembered as 'I was 45 on my last birthday'.

I've forgotten my password, how do I get this reset?

If you have registered challenge response answers in the Password Management Portal you should be able to use this to reset your password. If you haven't registered answers or are unable to use this service please contact the appropriate unit below to get your password reset:

  • Staff should contact their departmental IT Support staff.
  • Staff with problems with their Teaching (-T) Accounts should contact the ICS Service Desk.
  • Students should visit the ICS Service Desk. You will need to show your matriculation card. Departmental IT support staff may also be able to reset your password.

Once you have logged in you should change the password to something only you know.

Which systems can I access using my University user name and password?

Below is a list of some of the systems, there may also other departmental services please see your departmental IT support for details of these.

Which systems can not be accessed using my University user name and password?

Below is a list of some of the systems you won't get access to:

  • Secured web pages on the main University of Dundee website, or access to update web pages
  • Coda
  • P3
  • SITS (except eVision)
  • SOMIS

When will I have to change my password?

Your password will expire one year after you last reset it, or straight away if reset by the ICS Service Desk or departmental IT support staff. You should change your password as soon as it expires.

How will I know my password has expired?

You will be advised your password has expired and be given the option to change it when logging into dMail, or to the network from a PC with the 'Novell client for Windows' installed.

How long does my password have to be?

The minimum password length is 5 characters, and the maximum 12 characters.

Is my password case sensitive?

Yes, and we recommend your password contains a mixture of upper and lower case characters as it makes your password more secure.

Does my password have to contain numeric or special characters?

No, however we recommend that your password contain these as it makes your password more secure.

Please note that if you use SITS and/or eVision, your password should not contain any of the following characters:

  • : (colon)
  • ~ (tilde)
  • | (vertical bar)
  • (Euro)

Should I set the same passwords on my standard and (-T) teaching accounts?

No, you should use different passwords for these accounts. If someone discovers your teaching account password this will only allow them to access your home directory (h: drive). If the passwords are the same on both accounts someone could also use your primary staff account to access other services including your email account, the VLE, and shared departmental files.

Why do I get an error when I try and change my password using ctrl-alt-del, 'Change password'?

Your PC may need a newer version of the Novell client software, please contact your departmental support staff for further details.

You can still change your password using the Password Management Portal.
