Report a fault or problem with a PC guidance notes
You can help us to resolve a fault or problem quickly by giving us key information.
- Provide identification details of the PC
- Provide us with PC and location (Example - Room C02 in the
OTI Building ) - Tell us about any error messages that appear – send us a screen shot
- Describe any symptoms - for example, what is happening on screen or how is the hardware performing?
PC identity and location
Each PC on the University network is given a unique identity. There are two ways to find the name of the PC you are working on:
1) Logged into the PC
- From your PC desktop, press 'Ctrl'+'Alt'+'Del' keys simultaneously. The screen will change and a new window will appear titled 'Novell Security'.
- Under the section 'Windows Login Information' there will be text which says 'USER is logged in as PC NAME'.
2) Logged off the PC
- At the login screen (where you enter your login details), click on the 'Advanced' button, then select the 'Windows' tab.
- The PC name appears in the box beside 'From:'.
- Examples of PC names are - 'ICS-LIB-02', 'ICS-206', 'ASRS-031', 'FIN-045'. The first part of the name is usually is an indication of which department or school the PC is situated.
