What We Do

Professor Nick Davey

The Dean is responsible to the University for the smooth running of the School and is the budget holder. In this he is supported by the School Secretary. The clerical staff in the School Office provide a wide range of services to students and to the academic disciplines in which they study and also assist the School Secretary in servicing the School Committees mentioned below.

When should you contact the School Office?

General Enquiries

You will first meet the School Office staff when you enrol in the School at the beginning of your time at the University. Thereafter, they will be happy to help with general enquiries and to make appointments for you to see the Dean or School Secretary as appropriate. Also, should you encounter a problem during your studies or if you are unsure where to seek information or assistance, you should contact the School Office who will make an appointment for you to see the School Secretary.

See our Contact Us page for information of our location, telephone and opening hours.

Absences

You should also contact the School Office if you are absent from the University for any reason. Medical Certificates must be submitted directly to the School Office as soon as you are in receipt of them from your GP/hospital. The staff there will ensure that the appropriate members of academic staff are notified of your certification.

Repeat a year

Should you have to repeat a year of study as a result of extenuating circumstances (i.e. an illness or other circumstance which adversely affected your studies over the course of the whole year), please contact the School Secretary. The School Secretary will be happy to write a letter in support of any application to SAAS or your local education authority for repeat year funding.

Withdraw from your studies

If you decide to withdraw from your studies or to transfer to another discipline/institution you should first speak to your Adviser and then contact the School Secretary to complete the necessary paperwork.

Advice and Assistance

The School Secretary can be seen by appointment - normally at short notice - and can be consulted on any administrative matters which may affect you during your time as a student in the School. She can also be approached for advice and assistance with problems of a non-academic nature.

School Administration

Much of the business of the School is conducted through the following committees:
