The School of Humanities at Dundee scored highly in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The RAE measures the quality of research at all British universities between 2001 and 2007.

History

 65 per cent of output at 'world leading' and 'internationally excellent'65 per cent of Dundee’s research publications between 2001 and 2007 were rated as ‘internationally‐excellent’ and ‘world leading’ (4* plus 3*). This compared to 60 per cent at Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and St. Andrews, 50 per cent for Stirling, 40 per cent for Strathclyde, and 35 per cent for Glasgow Caledonian.

In overall U.K. rankings for research, environment and esteem, as measured by grade‐point average, History at Dundee came 24th out of 83 institutions

But for the core measure of research‐output quality, the fifteen staff of the History Programme of the School of Humanities at University of Dundee emerge as the leading unit in Scotland the premium historical research department of the country.
