English
Research in English covers the entire period from Anglo-Saxon to the Present and has particular international strengths in Nineteenth Century Literature (Romantic and Victorian), Modernism, and Contemporary Literature. English is currently developing Creative Writing and Film as new areas of research.
History
History has active researchers on the following geographical areas: Scotland, Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Russia, and North America. We have internationally recognized specialists working in many thematic fields, including cultural, architectural, gender, intellectual, military, economic, religious, labour and local history.
Philosophy
Philosophy is the leading research centre on contemporary European philosophy in Scotland and one of the top centres in the UK. It has international specialists on the philosophies of Gadamer, Nietzsche, Deleuze, Lyotard, Henry, Laruelle, Foucault and Irigaray, and strengths in hermeneutics, phenomenology, Continental philosophy and the philosophy of context.
Politics
The geographical research focus of Politics concentrates mainly on European politics - including UK and Ireland -, transatlantic relations, and Portuguese-speaking Africa. Specific subject areas include peacekeeping, cosmopolitan political thought and democracy, small Left parties, devolution in Scotland, Anglo-American relations, decolonisation, ethical issue and the environment, policing policies and international drug prevention, the international airline system, local government in Russia, and the problem of Basque separatism.
