Code of Practice for Contract Research Staff

In 1996 a Concordat on Contract Research Staff Career Management was agreed by the Research Councils and National University Advisory Bodies. The Concordat set standards for the Career Management and Conditions of Employment of Researchers employed by Universities and Colleges on fixed-term or similar contracts and funded through Research Grants or Analogous Schemes.

Following on from this, the University of Dundee agreed to implement a Code of Practice to ensure that the recommendations in the Concordat were carried out as good management practice by all those responsible for management and supervision of Contract Research staff. Although the Concordat's signatories include Research Councils and National University Advisory Bodies only, the University intends this Code to be applied to all Contract Research staff.

The principles of the Code of Practice follow those of the Concordat which are:

  1. promoting the active Personnel and Career Management of Contract Researchers,
  2. acceptance by the Universities and Colleges of the importance of regular review and career guidance for Contract Researchers,
  3. an understanding between the funding bodies and the Universities and Colleges of their own respective roles and responsibilities in meeting the costs associated with management of these staff.
