Appointment and Review of Deans of Schools

Appointment of Deans

  1. There shall be a Dean of each School who shall be appointed by Court following consultation with the academic staff of school, for a period of five years. Such initial term of office may be extended for further periods with the consent of the Principal and the School Board. Each Dean shall have such powers and duties and shall receive such remuneration as the Court may determine (Ordinance 57 - Schools of Study para 2).
  2. The appointment of Deans is a Court appointment however under the Schedule of Delegation (19.1), this responsibility is delegated to the Principal, in consultation with the School Board.
  3. The post of Dean will be filled by competition which invites internal candidates and in some instances to be determined by the Principal working in consultation with the School Board, external applicants. Staff in each School will be consulted about the appointments process and the selection committee will comprise the Principal, three elected members of the School Board, the relevant Vice-Principal (Head of College) and a senior professor from another College.
  4. The Dean of each School shall, when present, preside over meetings of the School Board, except any meeting or part of a meeting at which the re-appointment of the Dean for a further period is to be discussed, in which case the Board shall elect a chair person for the purpose of that meeting (Ordinance 57 - Schools of Study Para 3).

Review of Decanal Appointments

  1. If there is an opportunity for the Dean's apopintment to be extended, a meeting will take place between the Vice-Princial/Head of College and the Dean in the 4th year of a Dean's appointment to establish whether the Dean wishes to be considered for a further period of office.
  2. If the Dean does wish to continue in post, the VP/Head of College will meet with the Principal to confirm that a review of the Dean's appointmnt is required and to discuss timescales with regard to consultation with the School Board.
  3. An announcement will be made at the next School Board that a review of the Dean's appointment will take place to consider a re-appointment for a further period in office and to confirm the consultation process. Views will be sought from School Board members.
  4. A formal meeting will take place between the Principal and Vice-Principal to consider results of the consultative exercise.
  5. The Principal will, having taken into account feedback from the Vice-Principal and School Board, make a decision as to whether an extension of appointment will be offered to the Dean and, if so, whether this will be for another full-term (5 years) or for a shorter perid.
  6. The Principal will meet with the Dean and VP/Head of College to provide feedback on the review process and to confirm whether a further period in office is to be offered.
  7. The School Board will be advised of the offer to be made.
  8. Written confirmation will be sent to the Dean confirming details of re-appointment if appropriate.
