Profile
I joined the Programme as Professor Christopher A. Whatley's Research Assistant in September 2002, following the completion of my PhD People and Parliament in Scotland 1689-1702 (St Andrews, 2002). I worked closely with Chris on his recent publication, The Scots and the Union (Edinburgh University Press, 2006), identifying sources, collecting suitable material, contributing ideas and commenting on the text.
My teaching focuses on seventeenth and eighteenth century Scotland. The level three module, Restoration, Revolution, Union and Rebellion: Scotland 1660-c.1760 , covers a crucial period in Scotland's history, focusing on a range of political, economic, religious and social history. Making use of a variety of primary sources uncovered during the research for Scots and the Union , lectures and tutorials incorporate the latest ideas and information. I also contribute to a number of other undergraduate modules including the Making of the British Atlantic Empire, Twentieth Century Britain, Film and History , and the forthcoming Scottish Soldier: Image and Reality c.1870-1923 .
In addition to the Union my research interests include the Revolution of 1688-89, Scottish electoral politics, the late seventeenth-century and early eighteenth-century Scottish Parliament, elite society, Presbyterianism and the Church of Scotland, and the Scottish Military - particularly Scotland's contribution to the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. In all these areas there is considerable scope for revision, with a variety of subjects for students to investigate, reassess and develop.
I am currently the Programme recruitment and careers officer.
History is a relevant, engaging and ultimately rewarding subject. Research and analysis are integral parts of the critical process, and help you develop transferable skills that can be used in almost any career.

Research Statement
My research focuses on Scotland from c.1688-c.1740 with an emphasis on the Revolution, incorporating union, the Scottish Parliament under King William and Queen Anne, landed society, Scots political parties and high politics. I will develop these themes in my forthcoming monograph Scotland Under William and Mary: Politics and Government 1688-1702. In addition, I intend (with Dr Billy Kenefick) to develop several ideas relating to Scots volunteers in the Boer War.
