The patronage and purpose of plasterwork and interior decoration in 17th century Scotland

Contact: w.napier@nts.org.uk

This PhD research is a study of the emergence or re-emergence of the popularity of decorative plasterwork in Scotland in the early 17th century. Two significant cycles of patronage, influenced by leading statesmen representing an absent Court, can be interpreted through a study of surviving examples of 17th century decorative plasterwork in Scotland. My research puts 17th century decorative plasterwork in context, examines whether a native 16th century tradition of decorative plasterwork existed in Scotland, analyses surviving schemes and establish what, if anything, decorative plasterwork and the decoration employed represented to its patron.
