Sir Robert Drummond of Carnock, Epitaph and Subject
Contact: michael.pearce@scotland.gsi.gov.uk
This research was prompted by Alexander Montgomerie's epitaph and Robert Drummond's intriguing estimate for repairs to Scottish royal palaces. Drummond's role and our contemporary idea of the Scottish renaissance architect are elusive, and it is suggested that the estimate may have been more a political instrument for the Gowrie regime than serious commitment to a lavish renewal of the royal palaces. Though Drummond's own house has vanished, during the research its long forgotten painted ceiling was discovered in storage and displayed at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
