Scottish North Eastern Tall-Houses 1570-1630

Contact: matthewdavis@laingorourke.com

Between 1570 and 1630, a collection of country houses in the north east of Scotland, mostly within Aberdeenshire, were extended upwards with a flair for the romantic, incorporating apparent corbelling, turrets and gun loops. Long since consigned to the defensive bin for such superficially defensive characteristics, a more detailed examination reveals them to be 'tall-houses'. Far from defensive, these tall-houses demonstrate a particularly European flair for romance and heraldry in their design.
