A Study of Aspiration and Ambition: the Scottish Treasury Commission and its impact upon the development of Scottish Country House Architecture 1667 - 1682
This research examined the principal building projects of the period from the perspective of European rather than British architectural history and, in particular, the continuing influence of Androuet du Cerceau upon the greater nobility. It focuses upon the aspirations and building works of the Treasury Commission, and the striking architectural difference between seats of the noble commissioners (noblesse de l'epee) and the modern villas of administrators such as Sir William Bruce (noblesse de la robe). Consequently an evaluation of the architectural culture based upon the import of classicism is profoundly misleading.
