Studentship/Graduate Teaching Assistantship in European Gender History

Bursary of £12,000 p.a. plus fees paid

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship/Graduate Teaching Assistantship in modern or early modern European History, with a value of £12,000 per annum bursary plus a fee waiver (at UK/EU rate). The successful candidate will be enrolled in the European Doctorate in Gender History in which Dundee is a partner institution.

Deadline for Applications

Applications must be received by April 27, 2011. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to participate in an informal online interview using the university's web-based video conferencing system. (Applicants do not require any special software for this but access to a webcam and microphone are required).

Study Duration

Fixed term for three years.

Project Details

The successful candidate will pursue research leading to a PhD in the history of one of the following areas:

  • nineteenth and twentieth century Italy, Russia, France or Germany,
  • early modern Spain, Italy or the Netherlands.

He/she will be enrolled on the European Doctorate in Gender History which offers transnational supervision and a semester abroad at a partner university in Italy, Spain, France or Austria.

Particular specialisms of Dundee History staff include the history of policing, crime and prostitution; social unrest and resistance; gender and fascism; gender and work; the history of sexuality; gender and war; gender and imperialism; feminism(s); Russian culture; European noblewomen (c.1600-1800). The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake teaching duties, not normally more than five contact hours per week, of tutorials on first and second year European History courses. This will most likely entail teaching on one course in Early Modern Europe and one on Europe in Transition 1870-1922.

Entry Requirements

The successful applicant will have a good first degree and a Masters degree in History or related appropriate discipline.

Language Requirements

All applicants must have a high degree of written and spoken English. They must also have a good working knowledge of at least one other European language relevant to the consortium (i.e. French, Italian, German or Spanish).

European Doctorate in Gender History

Students on the Doctorate will have their main supervisor in the University of Dundee and a second supervisor in one of the partner institutions. Students are required to spend one semester at a partner institution and they will have the opportunity to meet with other doctoral candidates on the programme in an annual week of joint teaching hosted by one of the consortium universities.
