Why study History at University of Dundee?

Dundee is an excellent place to study History. We offer a diverse programme of post-medieval History, with special coverage of social, economic, cultural, religious, political and urban history. We have specialists in Scottish, British, European and American history, who cover the early-modern, period, and the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.

  • Dundee is in the first rank of History Departments in Scotland achieving one of the highest scores in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Our teaching quality has also been commended in internal and external reviews
  • We emphasise 'doing history', not just being taught it. From the first module in first year, students use primary sources (original documents) from archives and libraries in their studies
  • Doing history means conducting your own research. A History degree at Dundee culminates with an Independent Study Project: your own project, your own questions, your own research and your own original findings
  • Doing history means experiencing things first-hand, and study trips are important to many modules in our degree programmes
  • There is an active Student History Society which runs a programme of events and trips throughout the year
  • Dundee is a rejuvenating city on the way up. It's student-friendly and small with a great night life, affordable accommodation and excellent transport links. See the Campus Guide

Research Excellence

What we find in the archive one day can be used in our teaching the next. Our excellent research record is essential to the excellence of our teaching. Our honours modules (in third and fourth year) focus on our own areas of research, ensuring that students are getting the most up-to-date thinking on what they are studying. Student Experience

We are a small and friendly Programme, with a relaxed atmosphere where students get to know their lecturers. What is the History Experience at Dundee?

"With a diverse range of modules on offer, devoted staff and an enthusiastic History Society there is something for everyone. "
