About Us

The Graduate School of Natural Resources Law, Policy and Management was formed in 2006 (and adopted its new name in 2009) to bring together Centres which already had a longstanding international reputation for graduate teaching, research and specialist expertise on natural resources issues.

Within the School, the Centres continue to grow and forge cooperative relationships in research and teaching across the areas of law, policy and management with a focus on the energy, water and mineral resources sectors.

Our goals

Our goals are to:

Our approach

Our approach to natural resources regulation (law and policy) is to locate it within the broad conceptual framework provided by the notion of sustainable development. In this way, the Graduate School seeks to examine the challenges between the use of natural resources for macro-economic development on the one hand, and the urgent demands of climate change and security in energy and water supply and demand on the other.

We recognise that collaboration and cooperation is essential both in meeting the policy challenges and in carrying out research into the problems at international, regional and national levels. We are particularly interested in the challenges for law, policy and resource management that are presented by new technologies such as those associated with renewable energy.

We take an outward-looking, forward-thinking and problem-solving approach which informs our teaching as much as our research.

Our intellectual environment

We provide a stimulating and welcoming environment committed to building and nurturing a community of discourse where students are encouraged to:

Our graduates

Our graduates go on to pursue a variety of distinguished careers in the international energy and natural resources sector.

Our alumni currently hold important positions as executive leaders, expert advisers and international mediation advocates at all levels of government, international organisations, corporations and consultancy firms of all sizes, law firms of the highest standing, and national environmental agencies.

Our staff

Our academic staff are involved at the forefront of natural resources law and policy issues across the globe, advising on global policy and setting international agendas in this field.

The Graduate School is supported by an extensive global faculty of the world's leading natural resources law and policy experts who provide our students with unique access to experts from the World Bank, the United Nations, and private and public sector organisations.
