THE BORING BIT

We are a four partner practice looking after a population of 5400 patients. 85% of whom live within an urban area and 15% rural. The practice area covers Perth City and an approximately circular area within a radius of eight miles from the surgery.

The practice moved into Whitefriars Surgery on 25 May 1996. The surgery is spacious, purpose built and accommodates two practices. It is owned by the partners and provides accommodation for our community nursing team.

We are well organised by our practice manager, Jean King, who is the holder of two national awards in management. There are two lunch-time meetings per week - Monday is a business meeting and Thursday is a clinical meeting involving all partners, practice nurses and community nurses (community psychiatric nurses attend monthly). Other clinicians and/or social work colleagues are invited to attend on a regular basis and are made very welcome.

We are extensively computerised with a Windows NT network, incorporating PCs in every room. As well as electronic appointments, prescribing and recall systems, we use our computer system for audit, patient morbidity recording, email communication and internet access. We are in the process of changing to full electronic data management, including medical records, during the coming months (2003) and wish to reduce reliance on paper as much as is practical.

The surgery is staffed 8am to 7pm except Wednesdays (6pm) and weekends. Our reception staff are, of course, cheerful and helpful.

Fiona, Lesley and Doreen, our practice nurses, are involved in all aspects of general practice. They actively seek to develop their expertise wherever possible.

Out of hours work is organised by Perth Emergency Doctor Service. We work our share of sessions which works out at three per partner per month. Out of hours includes week nights 6pm - 12midnight, 12midnight - 8am and various shifts covering 6pm Friday until 8am Monday.

WHO ARE THE DOCTORS?

Dr Alasdair Dutton (graduated Dundee 1982, in general practice since 1987) is an accredited Trainer in General Practice. He has been involved in audit on a Tayside-wide basis including assessment of Registrar audit and fine tunes our in-house audits now. He is a Civil Aviation Authority Examiner for private and commercial pilots and has a special interest in Diabetes. Away from work he enjoys climbing cycling and skiing.

Dr John Auld (graduated Aberdeen 1986, in general practice since 1993) has been a police surgeon and was previously a GP Tutor for the University of Dundee. Originally trained in psychiatry before general practice, he brings a wealth of experience to his Registrar teaching. He is interested in the relationship between diet and abdominal girth! (Just checking you are still paying attention!)

Dr Bernard Reilly (graduated Aberdeen 1986, in general practice since 1990) is an accredited Trainer in General Practice. He was secretary of the Perth and Kinross division of the LMC and supported Dr Auld with the police surgeon commitment. Originally a GP in Aberdeen, he joined the practice in 1994. Away from work he can be found on the golf course - at home or abroad.

Dr Jane Reid (graduated Aberdeen 1980, in general practice since 1987) has spent many years in community based health clinics prior to joining the practice as an assistant and then half-time partner in 1997. She is our expert on women's health and paediatric screening.

WHAT CAN WE OFFER?

This has been a training practice since 1978. All partners enjoy coming to work. We are involved in teaching at undergraduate, PRHO, SHO and GPR levels.
Perth is a lovely place to live and work. Accommodation is easily secured and its central location ensures that most of Scotland is within easy reach whatever your interest.

If you would like to get in touch, give us a phone for a chat or use whatever technology you can afford. "These guys are fab" stated a previous Registrar - what better recommendation could we have?
