Whitefriars Health Centre

The Green Practice is one of the longest established practices in the city, having been founded in the 1870s by Dr Robert Stirling. We are an urban practice with an approximate practice list of 8600 patients and an 8-mile radius to cover.

We moved, along with another practice, to a purpose built health centre in May 1996. We have district nurses and health visitors attached to the practice and they are based in the building also.

The practice consists of 4 full time GPs and 2 part-time GP. We also have a retainer who does 4 sessions per week and oversees the child surveillance clinic.

We have 4 practice nurses and the administration staff consists of practice manager, senior receptionist, 2 full time secretaries, 3 full time receptionists and 3 part time receptionists.

There are a number of clinics run within the surgery by the practice nurses and community psychiatric services and drug problem counsellors regularly use rooms within the building to see our patients. We also have a community physiotherapist and a midwife who hold weekly clinics within the practice.

The doctors have a number of outside interests. Dr Hewitt is the medical officer for the Perth Hunt and also the Edinburgh Reivers Rugby Club. He spends one morning a week with them in Edinburgh and regularly covers their matches, both home and away. He also has a keen interest in sports injuries. Dr Carey is involved in the teaching of medical students both in the surgery and in Dundee. He is also involved in the LHCC and runs the diabetic clinic within the surgery with the practice nurses. A number of the partners are involved in the British Association for Immediate Care Scheme (BASICS).

The practice looks after 4 wards in the local hospitals, three in Murray Royal Hospital and one in Perth Royal Infirmary. Dr Wright oversees this.

Perth is covered by PEDS (Perth Emergency Doctor Service). The GPRs commitment (after a few months, of course!) is usually one overnight session and two six-hour sessions per month.

GPRs have "protected" time for their studies and all the partners take part in their training and tutorials. Study leave is granted and this is usually to be agreed by the trainer.

We are involved in an ongoing clinical audit project funded by Tayside Health Board, which is now entering its fifth year. Dr Hamilton is the doctor who oversees this, although the senior receptionist carries out the actual audit work. We have carried out a range of audits including patient satisfaction and the use of Aspirin therapy for secondary prevention of Coronary Heart Disease and CVA.

We are a very sociable and relaxed practice and we have regular nights out with both staff and doctors attending. We also have an annual practice BBQ at one of the doctor’s houses.

Perth has much to offer the sporty person, with the highly recommended Perth Leisure Pool and Dewar’s Ice Rink a stone’s throw away from the surgery. Bell’s Sport Centre and Ivy Court Leisure Club are only 5 minutes’ drive from the health centre and the ski slopes of Glenshee are only about an hour away in the car.

There are lots of nature walks nearby for the less energetic person (e.g. Quarry Mill, Kinnoull Hill and Buckie Braes). There’s also easy access for Munro baggers. Perth has 3 golf courses within the city and many rural ones are only a short drive away.

For the more cultural person, Perth has a lot to sample. There is an annual Festival of the Arts which runs for 2 weeks in May. Perth also has a theatre, numerous art galleries and a museum. Perth also boasts an excellent array of fine eateries, many of which we have tried on our practice nights out.

We do everything possible to ensure that the time spent as a registrar with the practice is one of the most enjoyable and educational experiences that you will have in your training period. We hope that, if you join us, you will be able to endorse this as much as those who have been with us in the past.
