Training:
The Practice has trained GP Registrars for many years with Dr Mitchell currently being the lead Trainer with Dr Matthews the Deputy Trainer. The Practice is also involved at times in the teaching of undergraduate medical students.

Crieff:
Crieff is a small town situated in a pleasant rural area of Perthshire. Dundee is 40 miles distance and Glasgow and Edinburgh 50 miles approximately. Perth, which has the nearest General Hospital, is 17 miles away. The Crieff Partners serve the rural area within a radius of approximately 10 miles. There are currently 6 full time and 5 part-time Principals in Crieff who work in close association with each other.

Health Centre:
Our new purpose built Health Centre was opened in November 2001 and serves a population of approximately 10,500 patients. There are 10 consulting rooms, as well as Practice Nurse treatment rooms, a minor procedures suite, offices, meeting rooms and a library, as well as a full compliment of attached staff accommodation including health visitors, district nurses and counsellors. The centre is also shared with the other Crieff practice - the Red Practice - in a separate wing of 6 consulting rooms. The Health Centre is fully equipped with resuscitation equipment, ECGs, Spirometer, glucometer, and digital camera. A4 folders are used for all practice records, which are fully summarised. The Practice records all patient contacts on computer and is essentially paper free!

The Practice has a list size of approximately 7,350 patients. In addition to the routine GMS work, they provide medical officer cover to local nursing/residential homes in the town and also Glenalmond College. A variety of health promotion clinics are held including Asthma, Well Woman Clinics, a weekly Mother and Well Baby Clinic (ante-natal/post-natal care and immunisations) and Developmental Screening. The GPs are approved by Tayside Health Board for Child Health Surveillance. Minor Surgery sessions are usually held in the Minor Procedures Room; however, this is not on a formal basis at present. A Diabetic Clinic started in August 1997 and there are plans for developing and expanding other services. The work of the Practice has been regularly audited for many years and we employ an audit co-ordinator. New initiatives and operational research projects are introduced annually. All emergency and casualty work is carried out in Crieff Community Hospital

Information Technology:
The Health Centre uses Torex Meditel computer system and each consulting room has its own PC (including Internet access) and printer. The Health Centre is linked to the NHS Net, BMA Medline, Travax and Toxbase (Poisons Bureau) and also to the Health Board, LHCC, and Hospital Providers.

Staffing:
There is a full time Practice manager, Mrs Sheena Walker, a full time Deputy Practice Manager/Senior Medical Secretary, along with 5 full time and 1 part-time Reception/Office Staff. The Health Centre also has 1 full time RGN Practice Nurse and 3 part-time RGN Practice Nurses, a Health Care Assistant and a Phlebotomist. In addition, 5 District Nurses and 3 Health Visitors also work from the Health Centre.

Postgraduate Meetings:
Over the winter period a Postgraduate Club meets regularly, (normally one evening a month), to which a visiting speaker is invited. Overhead, slide projection and PowerPoint facilities are available. The Club is open to all General Practitioners and Nursing Staff in the area. There are also regular lunchtime clinical meetings.

Primary Care Pharmacist:

A Primary Care Pharmacist has worked with the Practice for the last 4 years and his primary role is to develop and promote rational, cost effective prescribing and develop the role of the Pharmacist in General Medical Practice. He provides a wealth of prescribing information and co-ordinates relevant audit activity as well as helping to solve day to day prescribing problems.

Crieff Community Hospital:
A new Community Hospital was opened in October 1995 with 24 GP beds, long stay Dementia Unit and Day Hospital. This is located adjacent to the Health Centre. In addition there are fully equipped departments for physiotherapy, chiropody, occupational therapy and comprehensive x-ray facilities. State of the art equipment is provided in the hospital including ECGs, monitors, defibrillators, oximeters and infusion equipment.

Consultant Clinics covering all the major medical disciplines are held at the hospital.

The GPs from the Health Centre provide cover for the hospital, including casualty.

Out of Hours Rota:

There is an out-of-hours rota for weekday evenings and weekends with other Principals in Crieff and the neighbouring practice in Comrie. The Registrar is usually on call one evening every 3 weeks and one weekend in 11. There is always a named partner as second on-call to cover the GPR throughout the year. Out of hours activity is based in the Casualty Department of the Community Hospital.

Recreation:

Crieff is a high amenity area with a wide variety of recreational pursuits. The Crieff Hydro boasts facilities for swimming, squash, golf, riding etc. A new public swimming pool opened in August 1998. There is also an 18-hole golf course in Crieff and several championship courses nearby e.g. Gleneagles. Sailing and windsurfing are readily available at Loch Earn and both loch and river fishing can be arranged. Hill walking, mountaineering, curling and skiing, at the appropriate season, are within easy reach to those who are interested. There is an active rugby/cricket club in Crieff, which has good clubhouse facilities. There is a number of special interest clubs in Crieff, e.g. photography that readily welcomes new members.

And Finally…….

You don't have to be able to ski to enjoy a year with us!

We believe that we offer a high standard of training, in a friendly and committed practice, and in first class facilities in a fabulous part of rural Perthshire. With a minimal on-call commitment, there is ample time for study and play.
