Pilot Overview

Which Deaneries are involved?

The following deaneries have all signed up to pilot a range of tools.

East of Scotland
South East of Scotland
North of Scotland
West Midlands
Mersey
Northern Ireland
Yorkshire
Wales
Kent, Surrey and Sussex

Who will be involved in each of the deaneries?

o Administrators
o Registrars
o Trainiers
o Assessors

Who do I recruit and how many?

A minimum of 20 Registrars are required to take part from each deanery. However, to account for withdrawal for numerous reasons we recommend you recruit more than the required minimum. Registrars full or part time of any start date. The key issues are whether the registrar can complete and submit the required pieces of work within the required time frame. The same registrars have to be used for all of the tools undertaking by a specific deanery.

What training will be provided for those involved?

A local meeting can be booked for involved stakeholders by contacting Angela Inglis on either Angela.Inglis@nes.scot.nhs.uk or wbapilot@chs.dundee.ac.uk

Why get involved?

In moving from one system to another, it will be necessary to test (pilot) parts of the new system. The end result should be a more rigorous, appropriate and challenging assessment system which will ensure that only those doctors best equipped for general practice will become GPs.

The six external assessment tools which are to be piloted over the next year are:

  • Video - the criteria are a combination of the current SA and MRCGP video tools
  • Audit - the current SA marking schedule will be used but incorporating a scale from 1-7 for each criterion rather than present/not present.
  • Significant event analysis (SEA) - the analysis of 2 events in practice which are written up to a defined format.
  • Referral letters - a review to a defined format of 10 consecutive referral letters.
  • Multi-source feedback (MSF) -a questionnaire to be completed by staff and colleagues covering attitudes and behaviour of the doctor as a person and clinician.
  • Patient satisfaction questionnaire (PSQ) - this will use an already evaluated questionnaire (CARE).

The pilot work for the above instruments is vital for ensuring the fairness of the use of these tools as part of the overall assessment process.

The results from the pilot will be collated and feedback provided for discussion between the GP Registrar and their trainer and should provide useful insight and training discussion points.

When does the pilot start?

The pilot year began in August 2005 and runs through to August 2006.

Each tool being piloted has a specific time within the year when it will be completed and some are required to be completed more than once during the life of the pilot. The draft timetable is listed below:

Does This Arm of the Assessment Pilot have Ethical Approval?

Ethical approval has been applied for and is subject only to the inclusion of Participants Information Sheet to add to the existing consent form (both available from the download section). The ethics committee has also asked that local Deanery Directors inform their local NHS R&D departments of the pilot. A suggested letter for this purpose is also available from the Downloads Section for your use.
