The objective of this PhD project is to understand rural out-migration and to explore migration-environment relationship. There is no shortage of literature on migration in and from Africa. Yet the literature insufficiently accounts for short and long-term forces contributing to rural out-migration, how labour migration relates to labour and class structures in the rural economy, and also seek to reveal whether out-migration has a component that can explained by land degradation. The study sites are located in various parts of Katsina State of Nigeria that encompass a wide range of economic and ecological characteristic. By using positivist, approach, but informed by post-structuralist position, the study will use different research methods qualitative perception and testing of quantitative hypothesis.
