This study aims to examine the role of Saudi Arabian seaports in relation to passengers transport and facilities. This is important for three reasons. First, there has been considerable increase in passenger numbers. Second, in terms of the delivery of transport services, seaports were the first economic sector in Saudi Arabia to experience privatisation. Third, Saudi Arabia wants to diversify its economy away from oil and investment in seaports is part of this strategy, including the development of facilities for passenger ferries. Seaport development will increase national revenue from tourism and religious tourism in particular. The study used different research methods including structured and semi-structured interviews and a survey of 500 passengers. This doctoral research makes three original contributions to knowledge. First, there is limited research on seaports as nodes for passenger transport. Second, there is little research on the economic benefits of maritime passengers transport. Finally, there have been no studies on maritime passengers transport in Saudi Arabia.
